In the series Irish Historic Towns Atlas for Belfast, the street was in existence in 1813. Patton believes the name comes from the family name of the Dukes of Abercorn who had a town house at number three which they built in 1818. Martin’s Belfast Directory 1841-1842 lists people living in Hamilton Street. The street was badly damaged during the 1941 blitz.
